Two strong phrases said by Jesus, before going to the cross. He didn’t die in the cross, he did it here, to himself....
“And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will. ”” Mark 14:36 NKJV
Before going deep into that. Let’s take a look at another person that did the same statement to God, on his way to the mount...
“Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”” Genesis 22:4-5 NKJV
Abraham died to his dream, way before the mountain... during that three days trip.
But why God asks His bests man, His only son and His best friend to die to the desires of their heart? Why God's will for ourselves is to die? I believe the answer is found at the beginning of the whole storyline, back in Eden...
“Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.” Genesis 2:15 NKJV (Emphasis added)
I think that phrase explains all by itself, we are not in this world to make our own way, to fulfill our own desires. Our purpose in this life, is to tend and keep what belongs to God, not to fulfill our own desires but His. And that indeed was lost when man sinned, God looked for Adan and He couldn’t find him anymore.
“Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”” Genesis 3:9 NKJV
So I believe when God finds someone willing to die to what the other side of Eden could give... He asks that person to die to his desires for this short and limited life, so He can bring him back to an eternal one, with an eternal plan and eternal dreams, His...
Dying to ourselves is not an easy task, but when you get to the point of saying those words from the bottom of your heart “nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will” you get into a path that will take you back to your true purpose in life. And God will give you the rest, that desire that you initially wanted and you thought that was all in it for you... as a plus. God never leave us with empty pockets when we give up everything for Him.
“So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.” Mark 10:29-30 NKJV
When Jesus went down from that cross, He didn’t went down alone, He brough you with Him, He brought all of us with Him... for God. You my friend are God’s biggest dream and Abraham promise fulfillment. You are the answer from the Father to the son on that day in Gethsemane garden. You are God’s will.
You are the desire of the Father heart, that was stronger than His love for His only son. Bringing you back to the garden is the reason Jesus was willing to gave up his own life.
All that God wants is that when He get to ask for you, you can answer. “Here I am Father“ with no shame and no more hiding...
